The story of Corona

We recently caught up with Carlos at Citricola, our lime supplier, at the Fruit Logistica show in Berlin. His limes are the best in the world, and we fly them direct to Heathrow as soon as they are picked.  Our customers get them when they are 4 days old instead of 4-5 weeks old, which they would be if they came by boat.  As well as working with us, he has a partnership with Corona, supplying them with limes for their iconic lagers.

The story behind the rise of Corona is an interesting one. Originally, the lime was used to clean off the rust mark left by the beer cap, and then to get rid off the lime the locals just pushed it into the beer. When the American tourists saw the locals doing this, they didn’t realise it was to clean the top of the bottle – they thought it was a way to drink and flavour the beer. Hey presto! Corona had their unique selling point that is now famous worldwide.

We first heard this story when we visited Carlos in Berlin last year. He also told us about how his relationship with Corona came about. It started some 20 years ago at a similar show. Corona had the stand next door, and it soon became apparent that they needed limes, and of course, he needed some beers. So a swap took place and ever since he has been supplying them with limes.
