Three stars for Greedy Little Pig at Great Taste Awards

The world’s largest blind-tasted food awards Great Taste, has released the stars of 2014 and Greedy Little Pig is amongst the producers celebrating, as four of their products are now able to proudly carry the little gold and black Great Taste logo. They include Greedy Little Pig Chorizo, Greedy Little Pig Yorkshire Ham Chorizo, Greedy Little Pig Smoked Ham Hock Rilletts and Greedy Little Pig Sage & Black Pepper Thick Breakfast Sausage.

Judged by over 400 of the most demanding palates belonging to food critics, chefs, cooks, members of the Women’s Institute, farmers and a host of food writers and journalists, Great Taste is widely acknowledged as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers. This year a massive 10,000 products entered into Great Taste and of those products, 153 have been awarded 3-star. The panel of judges included Masterchef judge and restaurant critic Charles Champion, BBC Food programme presenter Sheila Dillon, MasterChef 2013 Natalie Coleman, and food buyers from Harrods, Fortnum & Mason, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols and Whole Food Markets, and chefs including Michelin Star chef Russell Brown.

Although Greedy Little Pig are a relatively new business, its products have received great feedback from chefs and restaurant owners over the last two years. “I am looking forward to promoting more Yorkshire Pork products around the UK in the coming months,” explains Carl Slingsby, Managing director.

Take a look at some of the judging notes

Sage and Black Pepper Thick Breakfast Sausage – These sausages looked plump and glistening as you cut into them. A beautiful colour and generous sausage reminiscent of a traditional butcher’s product. We are all in agreement that this was a great sausage with a perfect balance of flavour and definitely deserved a star.

Greedy Little Pig Chorizo – Lovely appearance of bright colours and glistening skin. Delightful aroma with wine and fennel coming through. Good fat content well distributed. Excellent meat content with a lovely balance of flavours, the smoked paprika flavour is delightful, there is just the right amount of fennel and it’s well seasoned. Judges liked the smokey aniseed flavour. Excellent colour and texture. Would be good for cooking or eating raw. The flavours of this product are very good. The fennel flavours and red wine are mild, but still present.

Greedy Little Pig Ham Chorizo – Good plump chorizo with lots of colour. The flavour is warm and the spicing is good, and the seasoning well balanced. The texture is chunky and rustic. Lovely sized sausage. Brilliant colour. Judges enjoyed the rustic texture. Nicely balanced spicing and well seasoned.

Smoked Ham Hock Rillettes – The fat is lovely and creamy and the meat is very tasty with good hammy notes, and a mild smokiness and sweet brine flavour coming through. Felt it was delicious.
