Fruit Logistica 2016

For the third year running, James and the buying team visited the Fruit Logistica show in Berlin in search for more perfect ingredients. Fruit Logistica is the largest food exhibition in Europe, with 2,700 exhibitors and 65,000 visitors. It showcases the latest innovations, products and the international supply chain.

The scale of this place is off limits. The exhibition hall is divided up into countries and every country being the size of 4 football pitches. The day consisted of meeting up with current suppliers including Carlos our Mexican lime grower, Sonia and Julian our awesome Mesclun mixed leaf growers just to keep that all important communication link and ultimately hunting for new gems which we could take back to the UK.

The first finding was the Doce Mel gold pineapple! With an unbelievable flavour and an outrageous golden colour. Then we quickly moved onto Brazilian Piel de Sapo melons. The most amazing flavour any of us had ever tasted. These need to be on your menus ASAP. The finding of the whole trip was D’alben herb growers. The passion this lady had for her herbs was incredible. Day 1 finished with some real positives.

Day 2 was another early start taking in some of Berlins historical buildings and architecture on the way in. Quite incredible to see where the Berlin Wall used to be.

Our first stop was to see produce from Kenya – fine beans, sugar snap peas, mange tout and baby corn to name but a few. Next up we went into France for their wild mushrooms, showcasing a very impressive quality of fungus. Dealing with the growers and farmers is something Wellocks really prides itself on and building long-lasting relationships and forever evolving is the key to our success.

Finally, after the day was coming to an end it was over to meet our friend Fritz from Kropfl, Obsthandel for some Belgian beers and goulash. What a great way to end what was a mind-blowing experience.

Further proof that the Perfect Ingredient is out there, and we will stop at nothing to find it.
